As an intern on the visual journalism team at FiveThirtyEight, I helped to create hundreds of charts and tables which appeared in many of the articles posted on the site alongside coverage of the 2016 Presidential Election. The charts I created were viewed by 1,000,000+ readers, appeared on The Daily Show, and were shared virally on social media. This process involved converting provided data into well-polished charts complete with helpful annotations. I also contributed to a few of the site’s interactive visualizations, which let their readers explore various data.
Because of my software engineering background, I spent some time improving the in-house tools they use to speed up the chart and table making process, as well as building a new tool for tracking real-time events like the debates.
